The West is not just a place. It’s an idea, a consciousness, and a way of life. The land west of the Mississippi River was once America’s great unknown, and it is in the spirit of exploring the region, in all its natural beauty, unique history, and possibility, that the books on this site exist. John Muir was one of the first to write about the iconic beauty of Yosemite, and his nature writings still inspire readers to understand and protect this National Park.
